We all count on our moms to tell us what’s up.
Whether it’s old parables like; “If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all,” or standbys like, “Eat your veggies,” our mothers’ advice, while sometimes silly, is always right.
So in honour of our mothers, make sure you’re wearing clean underwear and bring a sweater - it’s supposed to get chilly later - and add to this list of the hilarious and heartwarming things #MamaSays to enter to win a Whink gift pack.
Debbie Sparkes is Whink’s mom as much as she is mine. So I asked her what was the best advice her mom ever gave her. She had a few great ones. “Be kind, learn to forgive and never go empty handed to a dinner party. Oh, and always wear clean underwear, because you never know.”
The best advice Debs ever gave me? Well, she’s given me plenty, but nearly all of it is practical.
- Listen to your gut
- Drink more water
- Don’t sweat the small stuff
- Do one thing at a time (this is a tough one for me!)
- Be kind and patient with yourself
- Always say please and thank you
- Sit up straight
I thought I’d ask a couple others what bits of advice their mothers shared.
“You can do anything you set your mind to - just make sure it makes you happy!” Cathy Bennett’s advice from her mom.
Kim Keating, chair of the St. John’s Board of Trade, shared this from her mom. “A famous one liner from my mom is ‘If you don’t have self respect then how do you expect others to show you respect? So true, so true. Another one is “Tell the truth and you will never get in trouble.’”
My Aunt Judy remembers these gems from Nanny Joyce. “Nanny always said to ensure you have your own money. Keep a mad money account so you can always take a trip, buy a fur coat, buy your own jewellery!,” Judy says.
She told us we are a reflection of the company we keep so choose our friends wisely. That we should never walk by that perfect dress, you’ll be wanting it soon and regret not buying it.
She said marry for love and eat your carrots, they make your eyes sparkle.
Whink’s own Senior Sales Associate Angela Fowler and her sister Tonia were talking about their mom’s best advice too and they came up with these great ones!!
- Don't go outside with wet hair.
- Never say never (my mom has always believed in me, she is always a huge supporter!).
- Get an education.
- Life is too short to put up with bs! (Might not be appropriate but she always says it. Especially when things are going wrong!)
- If you cross your eyes they will stay that way!
- Never go to bed angry.
Did we make you think of any nuggets of wisdom from your mom? If you share it on our Facebook page you’ll be entered to win a prize pack of something sparkly you and your mom can share this Mother’s Day.
Win the grand prize Whink basket including $750 worth of Whink merch (including a $250 gift card!) by filling out an in- store ballot, which we’ll share in our #MamaSays window for Mother’s Day.
